Kris Kristofferson Tells Story Behind “Why Me Lord”, Then Sings It with Friends

Some songs are so good they get recorded by multiple artists in multiple genres over multiple decades. Kris Kristofferson’s “Why Me Lord” is that kind of song.

This amazing video tells the story behind this iconic 1972 song, originally titled, “Why Me” but changed to the current title after Elvis recorded it in 1974. Kristofferson, a country singer and actor, was known as a bit of a rebel and this song was seen as somewhat out of character.

Kristofferson said he was struck by hearing Larry Gatlin sing, “Help Me” in church and shortly after, was inspired by a “profound religious experience” during a recording session. The result of that inspiration was “Why Me Lord,” which has been recorded by the likes of Merle Haggard, Tanya Tucker, George Jones and Johnny Cash.
