Proposed ‘EctoLife’ Would be World’s First Artificial Womb Facility

Here’s a very scary video that proposes an “artificial womb” facility that would replace the mother with a lab to grow babies from conception to birth. It’s not real yet, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t be.

It is certainly like a scene from The Matrix: row upon row of babies developing in an artificial environment. It’s the creation of Hashem Al-Ghaili, a Berlin-based filmmaker who also has a background in molecular biology.

According to Al-Ghaili, the facility could provide many benefits such as a solution for cancer patients who have lost their womb or had their uterus removed. It could also reduce pregnancy complications and help countries experiencing population decline such as Japan and South Korea.

Furthermore, the video says it could be beneficial for the roughly 300,000 women worldwide who die of pregnancy complications and also the 30,000 or so babies it can produce every year.

According to the video and Al-Ghaili’s website, babies are steadily and sustainably ‘maintained’ by two central bioreactors. The first bioreactor pumps nutrients, vital hormones, antibodies, growth factors, oxygen, and an amniotic-like liquid solution through an artificial umbilical cord. Additionally, thanks to an AI-controlled system, each baby ‘receives custom nutrients tailored to their needs.’

Even though it’s not real, it’s still pretty scary. Watch the full video below!
