Audrey Nethery is a six year old who suffers from a condition called diamond blackfan anemia. It is a life-threatening bone disease that causes fatigue, weakness, and many other affecting symptoms.
Diamond Blackfan Anemia (DBA) is a rare, inherited disorder characterized by a decreased production of red blood cells, leading to anemia. It is caused by mutations in the ribosomal protein genes, leading to a decrease in the capacity of the ribosomes in the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. DBA affects males and females equally, and the symptoms usually appear in infants. Common symptoms of DBA include fatigue, pale skin, rapid heart rate, and shortness of breath. In severe cases, it can cause growth delay and organ failure. Treatment options for DBA include blood transfusions, growth hormone therapy, and the use of corticosteroids to increase the production of red blood cells. Bone marrow transplantation is the only known cure for DBA, however, it is a risky procedure with potentially serious side effects.
But Audrey is a strong-willed little girl who doesn’t let anything stop her from having fun and pursuing her passion of dancing. And while doing so, she has been providing awareness about diamond blackfan anemia and a lot of inspiration to other people as well.
