Meet Jim O’Connor. This strict tenured math teacher used to be a Vietnam soldier, and his students know not to mess with him. His tough demeanor often makes him seem unapproachable. The man has an authoritative voice that catches all students’ attention, and he is known for not putting up with rowdy and restless teens in his high school classroom. After years in the military, the man now works as an algebra and calculus teacher at St. Francis High School in California, with a “no bull” approach to teaching.

His students thought they knew everything about him until they learned his nickname outside of the school. They were simply shocked. The man is known as the “baby whisperer” after 5 p.m. and on weekends. Jim is a TLC Volunteer at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where he has devoted several days each week for 20 years, embracing sick infant babies. He first got involved at the hospital when a friend convinced him to participate in a blood drive.

Jim now regularly donates both blood and platelets. He is the hospital’s top donor, with 72 gallons of blood donated so far. Even though he is a lifelong bachelor without children, the man discovered that he is incredible when it comes to cradling babies. He enjoys it too. His students now have a newfound respect for him.
