On Freddie Roach: This winter, HBO will offer boxing fans an intimate look at the inner-workings of the sport. A six-episode docuseries featuring celebrated trainer Freddie Roach is set to premiere in early 2012. The show, directed by Peter Berg of Friday Night Lights, will be filmed in the cinéma vérité style (so it should be a notch classier than reality TV), and will follow Roach in his daily life as owner and operator of Hollywood’s famous Wildcard Boxing Club. Meanwhile, HBO has commissioned a pilot for another boxing-themed program: Spike Lee is set to direct Da Brick, a biopic series based on the early career of notorious fighter Mike Tyson.

Cerdan Vintage Sportswear: Inspired by the recovered sketches of eminent French boxer Marcel Cerdan, this sportswear line was resurrected by Cerdan’s grandson Nicolas and recently made available online. The line features the signature ’40s and ’50s aesthetic that defined iconic boxing style: think flat caps and wool beanies, raglan styling, and oversized emblems stitched onto warm-ups. And Cerdan’s heir isn’t the only one experimenting with this vintage look. Canadian menswear brand Wings + Horns recently collaborated with the Ace Hotel NYC and Japanese retailer BEAMS to create a collection of fashion sweats inspired by the styles worn in NYC’s boxing gyms of the 1950s.

KNUCKLE: This Sundance Selection in World Cinema Documentary chronicles the real-life, decades-long feud between two families in Ireland—a feud that comes to frequent, literal blows in bare-knuckle boxing matches. First-time director Ian Palmer trailed the rival families, the Joyces and the Quinns, for 12 years, shooting footage of a string of fights and capturing familial history as it unfolded in the process. The film has garnered mixed reviews, but it has been optioned by the (apparently boxing-obsessed) HBO network, for a TV series remake from the producers of Eastbound & Down. Bingo is for Lovers: The Bell House, a Gowanus, Brooklyn venue best known for hosting dynamic live music performances (Shakey made a cameo in December) and quirky themed evenings like TV Party: The Flight of the Conchords Sing-Along, has now added bingo to its roster. Hosted by local Brooklyn entertainers Dick Swizzle and Perry Comb-Over, Bingo is for Lovers takes the game out of the VFW hall by retaining the lounge act shtick of the duo’s Variety Game Show. Tickets are $5 and winners are awarded free drinks, show tickets and even cold hard cash. With the chill promising to linger at least until the end of February, this could be the next best thing to a trip to Atlantic City.

The Underground Rebel Bingo Club: Rec center games usually don’t give way to hard partying, but this series lends bingo the reputation of a Vegas night club. Shrouded in secrecy, it was conceived by a group of Londoners who rented a church hall for a weekly party only to sneak into the basement to “borrow” the church’s bingo cards for the main event. The clandestine nature of the night gave it such a debauched reputation that it’s become a global phenomenon, with events held across the UK, as well as in Madrid, New York, LA, and, yes, Vegas. Locations are kept hush-hush, but those who want to throw down some chips in the proverbial dungeon can join their city’s Rebel Bingo Facebook group to get the skinny.

Sissy Bingo: Palm Springs’ Ace Hotel & Swim Club is one of the hippest weekend escapes for a certain crowd of young and privileged Angelenos. Its laid back vibe and midcentury modern aesthetic—its former life was as a classic Howard Johnson—is an understandable pull for those escaping the weekly grind. However, once the weekend revelers depart, the party continues without the 9-to-5’ers thanks to the Monday night Sissy Bingo event. Though the primary draw is the evening’s hostess—Linda Gerard, a local personality best known for her enormous sunglasses, over-the-top senior style, and a passion for Judy Garland tunes—the prizes (cookies, champagne and gift certificates) make it a way better deal than another night of sitting at the bar.
