SUBLIME SELTZER
It''s all in the fizz: the new nostalgia for the heyday of seltzer
With more people giving up corn syrupy soft drinks and looking to beverage alternatives that don't pour pounds into their drinking glasses, enthusiasm for effervescence is bubbling. Going out of their way to find the seltzer that delivers the best crispness, flavor, clarity, and fizz release; here's a look at the ways a few serious seltzer imbibers are becoming connoisseurs of carbonation:
Delivery Seltzer: New Yorkers are infamous for relying on delivery services, but what many don't know is that along with their Thai food and Fresh Direct groceries, some also order locally made Brooklyn seltzer. The once commonplace NYC tradition of getting seltzer delivered to the doorstep alongside the morning paper recently received attention in The New York Times when celebrated seltzer delivery man Ronny Beberman fell off his own truck, thus halting his business indefinitely; the article reported that his loyal customers were not only saddened by the injury, but also at the fact that they'd have to ration their beloved seltzer reserves. (It should be noted that a subscription to Ronny's bubbly is not only coveted because of the delicious flavors, but also for the valuable hand-blown Czech and Austrian glass siphon bottles they come in.) Authentic egg creams are certainly few and far between now, but at least now a few lucky ones can set up their own soda fountains at home. Don't forget the U-bet .
Artisanal Seltzer Cocktails: Some cocktail bars are realizing the importance of quality carbonated beverages and are putting as much love into their basic mixers as their fresh squeezed juices. Red Hook's Fort Defiance recently installed an old-fashioned soda fountain at the end of their bar that delivers the hallmark of quality seltzer: carbonation that distinctly hits the back of the throat. House drinks, such as the Unexpected (seltzer and Cointreau, with a squeeze of lemon), are literally sparkling at this neighborhood hang. We love you San Pellegrino, but give us some good old-fashioned American seltzer pronto.
Home Carbonation Systems: Those who don't reside in the bougie boho bosom of Brooklyn can also tantalize the tongue with Grade A sizzling seltzer. Why waste money and resources on cases of Canada Dry when you can make your own? A home carbonation system is at the top of our holiday wish list, with dreams of homemade root beer dancing in our heads. We've got our eyes on The Soda Club System , which seems like the most cost effective way to drink our bubbles at home. The kit comes with a carbonator, bottles, and flavor syrups. The only problem is that we may also now have to purchase an ice cream maker for when we want to upgrade that root beer to a float.
