Art videos and YouTube remixes are no longer solely for BFA students, tech nerds, and those willing to drop stacks of cash on Final Cut Pro and the latest Mac. Now, every band with a computer, the right free software, and a little vision can make a decent music video. Live visuals are being VJed at clubs and house parties, and the act of (stealthily) making video remixes is becoming as common in the workplace as Solitaire on Windows '95. With the help of a few simple programs, you can do it too. Here are a few:

YooouuuTuuube
:
Not all of us want to take the time - nor possess the precision necessary - to painstakingly edit video clips to the millisecond in order to ensure that a scene change is on beat to our Britney/Shakira mash-up. And therein lies the genius of this site. Enter any YouTube video URL, choose a size and display mode, and watch as far out video montages are created from frame-by-frame mosaics. Perfecting YooouuuTuuube's output can be tricky, so take a trip down the rabbit hole with
this Alice in Wonderland
video that is a mind-bendingly good demonstration of what the program can do. We think Lewis Carroll would approve.

: Consumer-made tribute videos have long been a YouTube trend, but while they used to consist primarily of slideshows that were about as exciting as that PowerPoint presentation you slept through at last week's staff meeting, they've finally matured to the next level. We've been noticing a major spike in homemade music videos comprised entirely of video clips, and a big part of that rise can be attributed to the increased availability of free programs that allow those of us without a digital arts degree to make video collages with ease. This program lets you lift any YouTube video, in a matter of seconds, so that you can then manipulate it to your heart's content. Videos such as
Hey! Cliché's "Christine"
show why you might never get any "real" work done again. Then again, maybe the next time it's your turn to lead a presentation, you can impress your boss by keeping everyone awake.

JayCut
: Once you have the content you're ready to work with, hop on over to this site where you can edit your videos online for free. Share them via your favorite online social community, keep them on your computer, or even burn them straight to DVD to submit to galleries looking for the next
Nam June Paik
. Hopefully, the advent of JayCut means we will soon stop seeing three-minute viral videos where nothing happens in the first two, and instead, can just view the greatest hip-shaking moves of
Single Babies
in one quick clip. As for all those compilations of
video game triumphs
- some things just should be left off the Internet. Really.
