(DIGITAL) LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT
Our favorite lustworthy gadgets of the moment
|
|
Every so often, something appears in your life that you never knew you wanted, but once you lay your unsuspecting eyes on it, it seems like everything in your life has led you to this moment.
Okay, so maybe discovering a new invention isn't the same as meeting your soul mate, or when you picked up 101 Things to Do with Ramen Noodles in college, but sometimes it feels pretty close. Here are some new techno-gadgets we never knew we needed, but now can't stop brainstorming reasons to justify copping them:

Mac Coffee Table
: Apple has yet to introduce the long speculated MacBook Tablet, but ask any angry engineering or graphic art student, and they'll tell you the release of one would change their life. Well, a few revolting geeks of
Switzerland's Cosm!k' Art Deco Team
couldn't wait any longer and decided to make their own. By fitting a flat screen and an Apple iBook G4 laptop into a coffee table, they've created a coffee table jukebox with synched visualizers. It can also play DVDs in the side, or you can pull out the wireless keyboard and mouse and use it as a (somewhat) normal computer. Okay, so it's not quite the touch tablet, but who knew it was so much fun to watch movies on a coffee table?

Retro LCD TV
: If you're one of those people who doesn't have a TV because of how unsightly it would look in your Design Within Reach living room, you may want to reconsider. This '50s style tube will make any room look like the set of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Made by Japanese company Plus Minus Zero, it offers the HD quality we've come to expect in a TV, minus the standard flat screen - which while it once seemed exotic, now feels a little too sports bar for a living room. The 8-inch TV receives all of its images from a transmitter, so there's no need for unsightly cables. This creation just may rekindle that aesthetic love for TV you once had. Or just might frustrate you to no end with several of the remote control keys being Japanese characters.

Wingscapes BirdCam
: Although you may already see some amazing birds - hopefully breeds outside the pigeon family - prime for shooting (onto a memory card, that is) outside of your window, this is one of those inventions that has potential beyond its intended purpose. While it's meant to be a digital bird photography camera, we think Inspector Gadget would approve, as its motion sensor actually wields some pretty sly sleuthing powers. When your roommate brings home that same girl but tries to deny it, or when you want to bust whoever took that last sushi roll from the fridge, you'll have evidence. Those who prefer exercising their creative muscles rather than role play a 21st century Raymond Chandler novel may enjoy the time-lapse mode that lets you create your own stop-motion flipbook slide shows. With a slot for a 4GB memory card you could even set it up by some flowers or moldy bagels and create your own Planet Earth short.
