STYLE...WITH SUBSTANCE
Fashion websites that tell you exactly how to get The Look
It's rare, arguably impossible, for someone to instantly know what to wear without taking cues from what they see around them. (Frankly, getting dressed was easier in second grade when our moms made us pick out each day's outfits the night before.) More often than not, these sartorial ideas stem from absorbing and analyzing others' outfits and then figuring out how to make them our own. But with magazines dwindling and fashion bloggers being paid off left and right, it can be challenging to find inspiration for a new, personal style. When nothing seems original anymore, we all need a little push in conceptualizing the next head-turning ensemble. We found three sites, all of which explore the story behind the outfit, to help you own your look.
P.S.- I Made This : For many readers of fashion glossies, the pleasure in poring over the pages is found not only in the dream wardrobes presented, but also in the challenge of finding or making those same wares for ten percent of the retail price. P.S.- I Made This shows you homemade garments and accessories, complete with simple how-to tutorials, and the creative inspiration behind them, which range from Gossip Girl-style prep school chic to a Where The Wild Things Are-by-way-of Rachel Zoe fur vest . What better way is there to guarantee that no one else will have your look than by doing the cutting and sewing yourself? Don't worry if your scissors only operate in jagged mode: This is a world where Lady Gaga is a fashion icon, after all.
Looklet : Tweens have Stardoll , and now the over-13 set can also play with digital paper dolls. With Looklet, anyone can create a fashionable avatar in a matter of moments, and then place designer and vintage clothing and accessories on it. Selecting from a predetermined catalog of merchandise and models, members can compose an editorial-ready look fit to share with the world or remix one of Looklet's fan favorites. Unlike the Barbie you grew up with, all the items here are real and hand-selected by the site's stylists, meaning your online outfits can be entirely recreated offline. The ability to try out different looks without entering a dressing room is certainly compelling, but we're hoping the site will diversify its selection of models so we can see how our looks work on someone who's not a size two.
Style Like U : We love (and sometimes hate) street style blogs for making us want to be better dressers, but sometimes you want a little more background on a look than the fact that your new style icon's shoes are by Marais . This site ventures into the closets of the style-obsessed - young, old and wizards alike - and interviews them about why they like dressing the way they do. What ignites their creative light bulbs? How do they view fashion? And, what drives them as they change from one outfit to the next? Each person/closet is illustrated in a five-minute mini-documentary, but there is also a photo slide show that features all the brands and designers featured. (A lot of this stuff comes from traveling and vintage shops, so good luck finding it.) The site even recently made it into RZA 's 36 Chambers. Now won't you let them into your closet, too?
