A BEAUTIFUL WORD
Talk is cheap, but text style is forever
With dorm decorating season well underway, many Gen Y students are looking to upgrade the cubicles universities pass off as living spaces. Sure, the requisite Marley and Dali posters are still being tacked and taped onto the dull walls that define dorm living, but increasingly students are looking for something a little more personal and unique. Having grown up in an era in which more words were written and transmitted via Twitter, Facebook and blogs than ever before, many are turning to limited edition drawings and posters informed by the textual age:
Missed Connections Posters : Some young artists are looking to the scintillating world of cyber prose to inspire their latest works. For Brooklyn illustrator Sophie Blackwell, Craigslist is her muse. Comparing the classifieds site's Missed Connections to "messages in bottles, smoke signals, letters written in the sand," Blackwell takes her artistic cues from these posts and then lets her paintbrush run wild. The results are touching, graceful, playful images that resonate far more intimately than seeing that "Kiss at City Hall" poster for the billionth time.
Free Association Illustration: Grant Reynolds , an esteemed underground comic artist based out of Chicago, recently began lending his talented hand to illustrate the inner workings of your mind. No, he's not going to illustrate that hot fudge sundae you have been dreaming about since your one o'clock meeting. Instead, you can submit, via his Etsy shop, any three words that come to mind and Reynolds will create an original work that includes and interprets the keywords. One such poster, based on the words "Glazed, Apathetic & Leash," shows a slumped over, sweaty creature (seemingly a dog) with a crusty leash hanging under its neck and another bright-eyed creature hiding between its decrepit legs. As the buzz continues to gather around Reynolds' bold style, and demand for his work accelerates, we can't help but wonder if he's been scanning the dictionary before slipping into REM sleep.
Spam Buttons: In addition to pinning art to their walls, college students pin it to their sweaters, jackets and bags. Now they can adorn themselves with Seksi Spam Buttons that display all that misspelled junk mail that flows into their inboxes all day long. With badges cribbing such "erotic" phrases as "Pounding Sweet Ess" and "Nice Great Leegs," these buttons show off not only that a freshman is adept in the wily ways of the Web and sexuality, but also that they possess a wry sense of humor. (All things necessary to survive dorm life, according to this week's Gossip Girl episode.) And when a fellow student asks the wearer why there's spam on his jean jacket, bonus political engagement points can be scored, as proceeds from sales of these buttons raise funds for the Sexuality Information & Education Council of the United States.
