CABINET OF CURIOSITIES
Etsy designers have been bitten by the Biology class bug

Amid the sea of glitter-covered felt flowers and acrylic knit baby booties, Etsy is actually a trend incubator. In fact, steampunk was happening in the DIY marketplace long before the media brought it to public attention. Lately it seems that crafters have been haunting the halls of the American Museum of Natural History, or perhaps looking back to elementary school science fair projects, for inspiration, so don't be surprised if shrunken head necklaces suddenly come into vogue. Check out some of our favorite vendors of this aesthetic:

kg + ab
: Make your friends think you're conducting an animal behavior experiment with one of kg + ab's bell jars. The 'Bears in Love Under Glass' piece features two porcelain cast critters in a sweet G-rated embrace. It turns out that mating ritual dioramas make pretty great bookshelf fillers. Or, you could use the 'Porcelain Claws and Dome' to fabricate an impressive wild yarn about the time you ended up on the winning side of an altercation with an angry bird of prey.

Horrible Adorables
: We know that taxidermy is supposed to be "in" and all, but there's still something morose about a dead moose head staring us in the eye. We'll take Horrible Adorables' animal-friendly take on the art over the real thing any day. The plush mounted Nose Hummer looks like a fantastical creature plucked straight out of Where the Wild Things Are. Since we can't recreate the Mammal Halls in our living room, these PETA-friendly versions will more than suffice.

Lady Lavona
: Who knew lepidoptery could be so stylish? Even if you don't typically share Nabokov's passion, Lady Lavona's super hip butterflyspecimen vial necklaces will at least create the illusion that you are an experienced naturalist. Those whose animal kingdom loyalties lie with more macho species may want to keep the supernatural specimen snake necklace close to their hearts. And rest assured, no animals were harmed in the making of these baubles, as all specimens are ethically sourced.
