KICKIN' IT IN THE KITCHEN
Dishes from a closet-sized kitchen, celiacs’ delicacies, and not-so-all-American sandwiches are just a few of the specialty cuisines getting love in the bloated food blogosphere
While these cooking blogs may not necessarily hit the big screen in a Nora Ephron feature, they promise to up your game in the culinary arts. Because not everyone has the space, lack of dietary restrictions (or metabolism, for that matter) or time to make their way through Mastering the Art of French Cooking as did Julie Powell, an increasing number of food blogs are speaking to more targeted, yet just as hungry, audiences. But remember, when cooking with wine, do it the Julia Child way: "A splash for the sauté and a swig for the chef!"
Closet Cooking : This blog's name isn't inferring that cooking is shameful, but rather that most urban dwellers have diminutive kitchens comparable in size to a closet. (In NYC, it's not uncommon to find shoes in the oven in lieu of baking racks.) Closet Cooking was started when the site's writer grew weary of eating the same thing over and over again and finally put his foot down. Now he's introducing kimchi quesadillas, taco burgers, and blueberry cottage cheese pancakes to his diet - keeping simple classics alive and well by adding an unusual twist to each recipe. Can someone please give this guy a food truck to park outside our office?
Gluten Free Food Reviews : Julia Child's pioneering philosophy that food is an art and not merely sustenance was so right on. And just because you have an allergy doesn't mean you need to deny your palate its high expectations. If you're one of the many who've recently contracted a gluten allergy - were we ever relieved to find out all those years of stomach pains weren't warning signs of a fatal disease! - this site tests out gluten free products and recipes so you don't have to. Try the creamy chicken pasta, followed by a coconut pecan apple crisp if you still have room. Or when the late night sweet tooth attacks, whip up some foolproof gluten free brownies from a box and realize that not everything has to taste like cardboard when you're on a gluten free diet.
Scanwiches : Today not everyone wants to take the time to read a recipe, let alone read about reading a recipe. As much a photo blog as it is a source of new brown baggin' ideas, Scanwiches displays cut profiles of globally inspired sandwiches accompanied by simple ingredient captions. From Yola's torta to Nha Toi's banh mi, the tantalizing visual recipes give your taste buds an immediate answer to what you're hankering for. PB&J truly never looked so good. Why are you still reading this? Go eat!
