YOUNG MCS TAKE A BYTE
From style to gossip to politics, multicultural youths are creating web portals to call their own
In honor of the debut of our brand new Cassandra Report Multicultural 2009, we wanted to highlight some websites made by and for Young MCs:
Swagger New York: Unlike a certain other street style website, you don't have to be a model, designer or celebrity stylist to get snapped by Swagger's streetpeepers. Helmed by effortlessly cool BET alum Sian-Pierre Regis, this fly fashion website, highlighting creatively dressed youth from a diverse cross section of ethnicities, is a welcome reminder that fashion is supposed to be fun, not an exhibit of who has the most expensive shoes or the best metabolic genes. In addition to highlighting new, fresh styles, Sian-Pierre goes behind the scenes to showcase the music that influences his camera's subjects. He currently resides in Paris, so you can also check out the latest urban trends making the scene in the City of Light on sister site Swagger Paris.
Hissip: Living up to its tagline ("Latino Gossip Like You Never Read it Before"), Hissip is certainly not your typical gossip blog. Highlighting primarily Latino celebs, including the lesser-known but just as fabulous, Hissip makes sure to keep a positive spin - you won't find any sarcastic Perezian comments here - on all the latest Hollywood news. Not limited to updates on drunken spectacles and baby bumps, the site also features fashion and style content, as well as interviews with up-and-coming Latino stars.
The Unapologetic Mexican: This politically charged website explores topical news stories from the Latino perspective, especially in the areas of immigration, culture and demographics, as well as sports and entertainment. Giving a much-needed nuanced perspective on controversial issues, The Unapologetic Mexican doesn't hold back in offering up alternative opinions and well-informed commentary. For anyone looking to add some poignant reading to a less-than-substantive blog roll, we definitely recommend checking out this spicy intellectual site.
And by the way: According to research included in The Cassandra Report Multicultural 2009, 74% of multicultural youth ages 19-24 listened to music online, 60% played games online, 55% visited a social networking site, 52% read current news online and 52% watched a TV show online, all in the past month. Want to know where else they're clicking and more? Contact Liz Gray at egray@intelg.com for more information about the report.
