MODERN MULTIPLES
The convertible fashion movement
|

Multiples
are making a comeback; or rather, the concept behind those pieces of neon spandex beloved by teen girls in the '80s is being redefined by a growing number of innovative designers and brands catering to cash-strapped, yet still style-savvy, consumers looking to maximize their wardrobes with convertible pieces that can be worn multiple ways. Of course, the most obvious arbiter of the multiple movement is American Apparel, who has been peddling reasonably priced, convertible-chic clothing - namely, The Sash and The Unisex Circle Scarf - to the masses for some time now. Although the sheer versatility of such remains largely unexplored outside of AA stores, advertisements, and DIY instructional videos, we expect to see more consumers adapt to a multiple-inspired lifestyle as the economic downturn inspires more bang-for-your-buck behavior.
Here's a look at some of our favorite modern multiples:
|
Harputs OWN:
The private in-house label from trendsetting San Francisco-based clothing and accessories retailer Harputs Market boasts multifunctional statement pieces like the Swacket (a sweater-jacket hybrid), as well as more basic wardrobe staples like sweaters, shift dresses and overalls that can be worn dozens of different ways.
|
Butter by Nadia:
Brooklyn designer Nadia Tarr offers a whimsical take on this trend with her evergreen collection of ultra feminine convertible wrap dresses that can be manipulated into multiple figure-flattering styles - no matter what your dress size! Tarr initially launched Butter with one dress, but due to continued success and demand, she has since expanded the collection to include various styles, cuts, colors, prints and fabrics that range from the casually chic to more sophisticated, wedding-appropriate attire.
|
Twobirds Bridesmaids:
Speaking of weddings, we also adore this brand's functional-yet-flirty wedding party frocks. Thanks to their high quality, style, and versatility, these reasonably priced, universally flattering bridesmaid dresses make not just the bride happy, but also those who actually have to wear them.
