INTERNATIONAL TRENDS: AMSTERDAM, SHANGHAI, AND SÃO PAULO
The latest reported to us from our foreign correspondents

AMSTERDAM
Fashion Biking:
Although biking has always been a popular means of transport in Amsterdam, it's now also a lifestyle statement, and so it has become a stylish affair. Cool bicycle baskets, such as designer Marie-Louise Gustafsson's Carrie basket, are becoming more common, as are vintage wicker models adorned with carefully arranged flowers. Artistically-inclined cyclists are painting their bikes, while the fashion crowd is buying up capes (now sold at American Apparel) to wear while riding.
Old school Dutch city bikes are also making a comeback - and are even starting to be seen in the US. Canadian company Jorg & Olif imports the bikes and then enhances them for the American market by adding Japanese hub gears and drum brakes, thereby catering to riders who live in cities that are not flat. Similarly, Boston-based company JollyBike is importing and customizing traditional
Gazelle bikes, and The Dutch Bicycle Company
is also importing several classic models.

SHANGHAI
The Shelter Guy:
Shanghai may have found its own counterpart to Williamsburg and Echo Park.
Cool "underground" club of the moment The Shelter has created such a reputation in Shanghai that men who go there have become a "type." The Shelter Guy is described as an intelligent hipster who possibly owns his own streetwear label, does voiceover
work for video games, likes clothing from the vintage shop on Julu Lu near Ruijin Lu, and prefers warehouse and basement parties to glitz.

SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL
SP:00:
The coolest nightlife blog in
São Paulo at the moment is SP:00. So popular is the site and its photographer, Renata Chebel, that SP:00 has become a reference to the kind of night people had and the kind of party they went to - similar to what The Cobra Snake connotes in the US. Popular SP:00 club parties include Gloria's Vai, FunHouse's FunHell, and Vegas' Rockafellas.
