IG PICKS
A safe cycling concept project, reusable totes that are actually practical, and a drive for service
|
LightLane:
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an average of 600 cyclists are killed each year in motor vehicle-related accidents in the US Unfortunately, while more people are trading gas guzzlers for bikes, most roads are ill-equipped to safely accommodate those who opt for two-wheeled transportation alternatives - which is why we're hoping this concept project hits the production lines. Conceived by a group of designers at Altitude, Inc., the LightLane bike attachment uses a laser to project a highly visible virtual bike lane onto the pavement, in the cyclist's trail, thus creating a clear division of road between car and bike. Until cities start investing more in dedicated bike lanes, this gadget could potentially be a true lifesaver.

Blue Avocado Gro-Paks:
It seems that everyone is giving out reusable tote bags lately; the only problem is that the thick materials used for most render them less than practical for shoving in your bag for use later in the day. And those that do fit can't hold much more than a carton of milk and box of cereal. Specially made for grocery shopping, these shopping bag kits not only fold up into portable pouches, but they also include special bags for produce, frozen goods, and heavy loads, making the shame of carrying a plastic bag a committed thing of the past.

Starbucks Pledge5:
Part of the java giant's Shared Planet initiative to inspire more than 1 million hours of community service every year by 2015, this new volunteer drive is asking people to pledge just five hours of service. While the "reward" of a cup of coffee isn't exactly a major motivator, this new viral video by MC Yogi may be, as more than 750,000 hours have already been pledged. Check it out below:
