GIRL GAMING
More game publishers are targeting the fairer sex Plus: trendcentral holiday break

Until recently, gaming has always been regarded as a male-dominated activity, especially as games ripe with shooting, action, sports or racing continue to break sales records with their mass appeal. Due in part to the popularity of the Nintendo Wii and the portability of the Nintendo DS, new data suggests that the girl gaming market is bigger than first thought and has room to grow. Research also suggests that girls tend to favor more social and collaborative games with less competition and more opportunity for personalization and nurturing.

The recent release of THQ's All Star Cheer Squad, a game that utilizes Wii's motion-sensing controller and the Wii Balance Board for step movements, and Disney Interactive's High School Musical 3: Senior Year Dance are just two examples of the shift in attitudes towards girl gaming. Expect to see this sector of the gaming industry continue to rise as video game developers seize the opportunity to capture girls' attention through more targeted titles.

And by the way: trendcentral will be on vacation for the rest of the week but we'll be back on Monday. Happy Holidays!
