WEBSITES TO KNOW
ibeatyou, Chictopia, and Causecast
ibeatyou: Started by a group of very competitive friends, ibeatyou is an online platform for competitive spirits around the world to connect and challenge each other. Competitions run the gamut from "Best Drawn On Facial Hair," a challenge inviting competitors to submit their best eyeliner/Sharpie-created mustache or goatee, to cause-related competitions, like the Declare Yourself challenge, in which Jessica Alba challenges users to submit a video of themselves that explains why we need to get out and vote. While there are privacy settings that allow you to keep a competition out of the public eye, the rest of the competitions are held for the world to both see and participate in, allowing fellow members of the site to vote for the winner on a 1-5 point rating system with the option to leave comments or share their favorites with those outside the competition-crazed community. Letting the public choose the true winner, the site also allows you to smack talk with fellow challengers and offers tracking stats to back up your bragging. It's the perfect place to show off skills you may have previously undervalued - and have the "award" to prove it. Let the games begin!
Chictopia: Like a Facebook for fashionistas, Chictopia is an online community where users can upload photos of self-styled outfits, as well as browse their peers' ensembles. Also available are user reviews of stores and various forums to discuss designers, trends, and notable events in the fashion world. And in an effort to distinguish this social networking site from the many others, Chictopia has also launched an online publishing group, ironically called Everybody Is Ugly, that features demographic specific blogs (males, teens, etc.) offering tips and advice to readers who write in. Teen Vogue has already hailed Chictopia as the "next big thing" and we couldn't agree more.
Causecast: Eighty-five percent of youth today think it's important to make the world a better place (The Cassandra Report, May 2008), and Causecast is looking to reach these socially conscious consumers by acting as a powerful online social medium that connects nonprofits, leaders, brands, and individuals to those who want to make a positive impact on the world. Boasting a roster of well-recognized celebrity activists and leaders, and 30 nonprofit organizations, Causecast is a one-stop-shop for philanthropy, including a social network, news outlet, and entertainment source. In an effort to increase popular interest in social causes, the site makes it easy for users to give back and do good on their own. Users can highlight their favorite causes by adding a widget to their own personal sites and profiles. Additionally, cause-related news from around the world is available at Causecast, as well as a weekly news show, with shorter segments available on the site's YouTube channel.
