HELLO HEALTH
Bringing affordable healthcare to the plugged-in and uninsured
Doctor probably isn't the first profession that comes to mind when one thinks of hipsters, but both media and fans have bestowed upon Williamsburg's Dr. Jay Parkinson the title of "hipster doctor". Dr. Parkinson first started making headlines earlier this year among the young and uninsured for not only making affordable housecalls, but also for providing follow up via text message, IM, email or video conference. His practice became so successful that he recognized a greater need for the type of plugged-in services he was offering and recently launched a franchise of his mobile medicine, called Hello Health. Perfect for the perennially uninsured perma-lance set, patients "become members for a Netflix-priced monthly fee and then pay a fee for service"; follow-up is available via a variety of digital communication means, and patients are encouraged to ask questions whenever they should arise. Two other doctors have joined Dr. Parkinson at Hello Health's first office (also in Williamsburg), and we expect other locations to open soon. (However, house calls are also still available.)
While much of the focus on emerging mobile technologies lies in the entertainment category, the practical functionalities of mobile tech should not be ignored, particularly in the healthcare area. With insurance coverage becoming elusive for many Americans, particularly among young people opting for the perma-lance lifestyle, we expect to see preventative healthcare and the technological tools that support it become a more mass behavioral trend.
