WEBSITES YOU NEED TO KNOW
An examination of the U.S. voting system, a surprise-peddling e-tailer, and a new fashion website celebrating individual style
Why Tuesday?: As the campaign trail continues to heat up, so is interest in the inner workings of the U.S. political machine. The online portal of the non-partisan grassroots organization of the same name, Why Tuesday? is compelling young people to examine the American voting system and to look for ways to bring more people to the polls come November. Consisting of both text and frequent video postings, the site is resonating not only among the Web elite, being both the recipient of a MySpace IMPACT Award and a 2008 Webby Award nominee, but also among Gen Y, with many of our trend reporters citing the website recently.
Something Store : Consumers looking to add some excitement to their lives for a very low premium will likely get a kick out of this website that dabbles in the art of surprises. In what's probably one of the easiest e-commerce transactions ever, visitors to the site simply log on and for $10 (including shipping), opt in to purchase something. And that's where the fun begins: a randomly selected item (could be a cool tech device, handmade jewelry, a travel clock, video game, gift card to a major retailer, a magazine subscription, coffee mug, wallet, a box of chocolates, or any one of over hundreds of random items) will ultimately show up in the buyer's mailbox seven days later. Of course, for every high premium item that's "randomly selected" for one of the luckier consumers (e.g., iPods, designer jeans, high end beauty products), the Long Island based e-tailer selects and sends out 10 or more less pricey items (e.g., a coffee mug, a board game, a garden tool).
The Vintage Society: Once a style blog, last week The Vintage Society launched as its own official fashion website, complete with inspirational photos, self-styling documentation, and featured personal style bloggers from across the web, all representative of the original blog's celebration of individual style. The site's founder, Beth Jones, is currently one of six "Visionaries in Residence" at Quicksilver's siteLA, where the new site was feted with a presentation of the Traveling Shirt project.
