ABSINTHE FOR BEGINNERS
Newest drink craze Plus: Disney’s new digital studio
After making its debut in the US for the first time in a century, absinthe has become the latest adult beverage to lure the cocktail crowd. As a result, absinthe tasting parties are now popping up as the latest in retro entertainment, similar to how fondue parties have been trendy in recent years. Produced using traditional distillation methods and ingredients, including wormwood, only two brands of absinthe (Lucid and Kübler) are currently on the market in the US, but more are expected. In addition to its mythical hallucinogenic properties, a large part of absinthe's appeal is the ritual involved in its preparation and the collectable ornamental slotted spoons necessary to do so. Here's how you do it!
CLASSIC FRENCH METHOD
-
Pour approximately one shot (1/2 – 1 oz.) of absinthe into a tall glass
-
Balance your absinthe spoon on top of the glass and place a sugar cube on top of it
-
Slowly drizzle approximately three pours worth of chilled water over the sugar cube. The absinthe should immediately begin to turn white or a pearly-gray color.
-
Slowly savor the drink—the effects may take some time to kick in!
And by the way: Disney's new digital studio, Stage 9 Digital Media, just premiered Squeegees, a comedy show about a group of window washers, on ABC.com and YouTube. The studio plans to create up to 20 other online series.
