Twitter, CrowdSpirt and Flixster
Plus: Facebook’s virtual gifts

COMMUNICATION
Twitter: Similar to Dodgeball, this new Web- and phone-based service helps users keep a record of their activities, as well as view the goings on and whereabouts of their friends. Users can text, IM, or go directly to the Web to log not just where they are, but what exactly they are doing.

INNOVATION
CrowdSpirit: With consumer-generated marketing content getting so much press, we’ll likely start to see consumer-generated products take the lead soon. This site offers a forum for inventors to submit new electronic product ideas. Members of the CrowdSpirit community vote on products to be created; define the products’ specifications; and can then invest money to support product development. Select members then stay involved with the manufacturing, distribution and promotional efforts.

NETWORKING
Flixster: Those looking for an alternative to Netflix’s peer reviews should check out this rapidly growing film-focused social networking site where users rate and discuss movies, directors and actors.

And By the Way:
Facebook is currently testing virtual gifts, which are small icons that Facebook users can give to other members to display in the “wall” section and in a new gift area. While the gifts are free at the moment, ultimately they will cost $1; many believe these virtual gifts could become a significant revenue generator for the site.
